Who has time to keep track of all the things United breaks? (See bottom of story for some statistics, which suggest that several other airlines are worse.)

But Carroll and his band, Sons of Maxwell, have told their tale with rhythm, harmony, rhyme, not to mention some wicked humor, and their four-minute, 37-second complaint, "United Breaks Guitars," above, is racking up views on YouTube.

Before we tell you what United has to say about all this, here's a quick version of Carroll's saga, as distilled from his website. (Messages to Carroll's home phone and e-mail address went unanswered Tuesday night.):

In spring 2008, Carroll and company headed from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Omaha, by way of (shudder now, frequent fliers) Chicago. Just after landing at O'Hare airport, says Carroll, one of his bandmates and another passenger looked out their windows and saw baggage handlers heaving around guitars with wanton disregard.

Carroll says he complained immediately to three flight attendants, but was met with indifference. Some time after arrival in Nebraska, Carroll says, he discovered that, sure enough, the base of his 710 Taylor acoustic guitar had been smashed.

But he had gigs to play, so he found a way to do that. As Carroll acknowledges, he didn't attempt to complain again until beginning his return flight a week later.

Over the following days, weeks and months, Carroll made many phone calls to United representatives in Chicago and (who didn't see this coming?) India, but basically he says United did nothing for him.

Meanwhile, Carroll spent $1,200 getting the guitar repaired "to a state that it plays well but has lost much of what made it special."

The capping blow, Carroll says, was an e-mail from a Ms. Irlweg, who denied his claim for compensation because he didn't complain in the right place, or at the right time. The airline wouldn't even give him $1,200 in travel vouchers, Carroll contends.

So he vowed a sort of musical revenge - not one protest song, not two, but three, with a video for each, all to be posted on the Web. Carroll says he told Ms. Irlweg all about it, but got the usual response.

The video was posted on July 6. In its first 23 hours, "United Breaks Guitars" had drawn 461 comments on YouTube, most of them maligning the airline, and one of them hearkening back to Tom Paxton and his tune of aerial guitar trouble, "Thank you, Republic Airlines." (The viewer counter appeared to be stuck at 3,441, but the video quickly went viral, with the Consumerist showing more than 24,000 views by Tuesday night.)

Among the comments: "Revenge is a dish best served with country accompaniment."

So what does United have to say about the song?

"This has struck a chord with us, and we've contacted him directly to make it right," said Robin Urbanski, a spokeswoman for United. (Urbanski also said she "loved" the video.)

Urbanski said a phone meeting had been scheduled for Wednesday, and that before the airline decides exactly what to do for Carroll, "we need to have that conversation with him directly."

Meanwhile, Carroll's website says he's written and recorded the second song, with video to follow soon. And he has all sorts of other plans for a third song, and various tactics to achieve a million Web hits, which he believes will give some sense of revenge.

In fact, he writes, "I should thank United... If my guitar had to be smashed due to extreme negligence I'm glad it was you that did it."

By the way: In the U.S. Department of Transportation's tally of lost, damaged, delayed or pilfered baggage in April 2009, United ranked 10th among 19 carriers, with 13,517 "baggage reports" among 4.03 million passengers.

via: guitarnewsdaily.com

Mark Frauenfelder's Cigar Box Guitars

Mark Frauenfelder's (of BoingBoing blog) crafty imagination created these awesome cigar box guitars.

Cigar Box Guitar No. 1

My first cigar box guitar. The frets are crooked, the action is too high (because I forgot that I needed to shave off the part of the neck that's glued to the box), the sound hole cuts into the neck, the neck is split, the fret dots aren't centered. And yet it works! I am already starting CBG #2.

Cigar Box Guitar No. 2

For my second cigar box guitar, I bought a six foot length of 1 x 2 oak from Home Depot. I made sure the piece of lumber was flat and straight. It weighed a lot more than the pine wood I’d used in my first cigar box guitar, and felt a lot better in my hands. I also bought a small metal miter box from a hobby store to cut the fret slots in the neck. This time, I made perfectly straight fret cuts.

I shaved off the part of the neck that attached to the cigar box so that the surface of the fret board was flush with the top of the cigar box, unlike on my first cigar box guitar. Remembering Mister Jalopy’s dictum, “screws not glues,” I screwed the neck to the cigar box with three fasteners. This way, if I need to make changes or later want to swap in a new cigar box, it will be a simple matter to remove the screws.

I made a couple of small mistakes, like drilling a hole in a spot that hit a screw going in a perpendicular direction to the hole, but this guitar build went very smoothly. The action is low, but not so low that it buzzes, and I can play the strings all the way up to the highest fret (the 20th) without interference.

For guitar beginners who are trying to learn how to play the guitar, it's nice to learn too on how to create one for yourself. :)

Nike Responds To Van Halen Complaint "Did Not!"

Nike Denies Copying Van Halen's 'Frankenstein' Guitar Design
Eddie Van Halen is suing the company for using a pattern similar to his iconic guitar on Dunk shoe line.

Van Halen are suing Nike over an alleged design similarity between Eddie Van Halen's iconic "Frankenstein" guitar and a new line of the sportswear company's sneakers, according to reports. But in a statement to Footwear News, Nike has now called the lawsuit without merit.

"Based on the information provided to us, we have not infringed on any rights held by Mr. Van Halen," the statement read. "Nike's Dunk shoe design is not substantially similar to any of the Van Halen designs, and Nike has not referenced the 'Van Halen' name or image as part of any marketing campaign or promotional material associated with the shoe."

ELVH, Van Halen's company, filed a cause of action for copyright infringement complaint last Friday in a Los Angeles court against Nike, alleging that the design of some Dunk Low sneakers matches that of Van Halen's famous guitars.

In 2001, the group copyrighted the crisscrossing red, black and white pattern that Eddie created in the late '70s for his hybrid version of Gibson and Fender electric guitars. As of the mid-1990s, after constant and numerous changes in band members, the brand of "Black Sabbath" was literally in the toilet and Tony Iommi (touring under the name Black Sabbath) was reduced to performing in clubs. Since 1997 when Geezer, Bill and myself rejoined the band, Black Sabbath has returned to its former glory as we headlined sold-out arenas and amphitheatres playing to upwards of 50,000 people at each show around the world.

"We worked collectively to restore credibility and bring dignity back to the name “Black Sabbath” which lead to the band being inducted into the UK and US Rock & Roll Hall of Fames in 2005 and 2006, respectively. Throughout the last 12 years, it was my management representatives who oversaw the marketing and quality control of the “Black Sabbath” brand through OZZFEST, touring, merchandising and album reissues.

"The name "Black Sabbath" now has a worldwide prestige and merchandising value that it would not have had by continuing on the road it was on prior to the 1997 reunion tour. Tony, I am so sorry it’s had to get to this point by me having to take this action against you. I don’t have the right to speak for Geezer [Butler] and Bill [Ward], but I feel that morally and ethically the trademark should be owned by the four of us equally. I hope that by me taking this first step that it will ultimately end up that way.

"We’ve all worked too hard and long in our careers to allow you to sell merchandise that features all our faces, old Black Sabbath album covers and band logos, and then you tell us that you own the copyright. We’re all in our 60s now. The Black Sabbath legacy should live on long after we have all gone. Please do the right thing.”

Hendrix Murdered By His Manager, Says Former Aide

The rock legend Jimi Hendrix was murdered by his manager, who stood to collect millions of dollars on the star's life insurance policy, a former roadie has claimed in a new book.

James "Tappy" Wright says that Hendrix's manager, Michael Jeffrey, drunkenly confessed to killing him by stuffing pills into his mouth and washing them down with several bottles of red wine because he feared Hendrix intended to dump him for a new manager, according to a report in the Mail on Sunday.

In his book, Rock Roadie, Mr Wright says Jeffrey told him in 1971 that Hendrix had been "worth more to him dead than alive" as he had taken out a life insurance policy on the musician worth $2m (about £1.2m at the time), with himself as the beneficiary. Two years later, Jeffrey was killed in a plane crash.

Jimi Hendrix died in September 1970, aged 27. An ambulance crew found his body in the Samarkand Hotel, west London, in the room of a woman called Monika Dannemann, whom he had known for only a few days.

Hendrix was alone in the room, lying on his back, with the gas fire on and the door open. There was no record of who had called the ambulance. His inquest recorded the cause of his death as barbiturate intoxication and inhalation of vomit, and recorded an open verdict.

Describing the night of Jeffrey's confession, Mr Wright wrote: "I can still hear that conversation, see the man I'd known for so much of my life, his face pale, hand clutching at his glass in sudden rage."

Wright claims Jeffrey told him: "I had to do it, Tappy. You understand, don't you? I had to do it. You know damn well what I'm talking about.

"I was in London the night of Jimi's death and together with some old friends... we went round to Monika's hotel room, got a handful of pills and stuffed them into his mouth... then poured a few bottles of red wine deep into his windpipe.

"I had to do it. Jimi was worth much more to me dead than alive. That son of a bitch was going to leave me. If I lost him, I'd lose everything."

John Bannister, the surgeon who dealt with Hendrix at hospital, has said he was convinced the star had drowned in red wine, despite having very little alcohol in his bloodstream.

"I recall vividly the very large amounts of red wine that oozed from his stomach and his lungs and in my opinion there was no question that Jimi Hendrix had drowned, if not at home then on the way to the hospital," he wrote in 1992.

From www.independent.co.uk

Legotar: A Guitar Made Out of Lego

I've seen some pictures about guitars made out of Lego, but there seems not much information about how they made it, until I bumped into this website of Carl Rosendahl. Being a musician and an engineer, Carl thought of building his own electric guitar.

I decided a long time ago that I wanted to build an electric guitar. Actually, I want to build a few - the first one is to get one under my belt and learn from. The second one will be more a work of artistic expression, and the third (if I ever get there) is a silly idea for a good conversation piece.

I decided to take the plunge in 2001 after a conversation with a friend at the NAMM convention. My criteria for the first guitar was simple: it needed to be easy to make, yet somehow unique. I considered all sorts of things, including just a block of wood, pipe, or random junk screwed together. Then the flash came: LEGO!

I built the first draft in late January of 2001 and finished it late summer. The bottom line is it's very cool looking, plays okay and has some interesting flaws that I would fix if I were every crazy enough to do it again. This is my kinda place! Can I come hang out here after school?’ I am very excited to announce that the Colquitt County Arts Center is developing such a space, a guitar studio called the Fret House. Our local Home Depot store is providing supplies and manpower to renovate the room. Several local businesses and families are funding the necessary equipment and furnishings,” said Eric Foster-Whiddon, Imago Music and Colquitt County Arts Center guitar instructor.

He also said all the materials being used to create the studio had been donated by Home Depot and their vendors.

“At this point we haven’t had to purchase anything. Everything has been donated,” he said.

Foster-Whiddon said that a couple of managers from the store had come by the arts center to speak to Jeff Ophime, executive director, about a project for Team Depot.
“The timing was just right. I needed the help and they were looking for a project,” Foster-Whiddon said.

“This is just wonderful that Home Depot has selected the arts center as one of their community projects. It’s an honor that they see the value of the arts center to our community,” said Ophime.

Managers and area specialists from the store donated their own time to help put the studio together, along side Foster-Whiddon.

“We’re trying to give back to the community since we’ve been in this area for five years,” said Alesia Lee, a Home Depot employee.

In the past, Team Depot has partnered with some of the local elementary schools and this year will be helping out Colquitt County High School’s Ag. Department, Lee said. They will be donating plants and volunteer time there, as well.

“The arts center impacts so many people. We can touch so many people in the community. We strive to improve everything we touch,” said Melissa Capen, also a Home Depot employee.

Know About Variety of Guitars

The spirit of musical divinity that a guitar beholds has been spelling the divine magic of music since ages. Guitar derives its origin from the ancient roots of music and its usage is employed in a wide variety of musical styles. It classically has six strings, but four, seven, eight, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen and eighteen string guitars also exist. While the popular classical guitar that we come across currently first showed in Spain, still it owned a series of historical events that witnessed a number of related guitar types developed and brought to play across Europe. The roots of the guitar can be traced back thousands of years into the sands of history to an Indo-European origin in instruments, then recognized as central Asia and India.

This is one of the primary reasons as to why the guitar itself is somehow indirectly related to instruments such as the tanbur and setar, and the Indian sitar. Guitars can be divided into two broad categories, acoustic and electric.

Acoustic guitars

An acoustic guitar is the one which is not dependent on any external device to be heard. For accomplishing this it uses a soundboard which is a wooden piece mounted on the front of the guitar's body. There are numerous subcategories as well within the main category of the acoustic guitar group. These are classical and flamenco guitars; steel string guitars, which include the flat top or "folk" guitar; twelve string guitars and the arch top guitar.

Electric guitars

Electric guitars comprise of solid, semi-hollow, or hollow bodies, and produce very little sound in absence of amplification. In the case of these electric guitar's Electromagnetic pickups convert the vibration of the steel strings into electrical signals, which are transferred for sound amplification to an amplifier through a cable or radio transmitter. The sound gets frequently modified by other electronic devices or the natural distortion of valves in the amplifier. The usage of electric guitar is employed extensively in jazz, blues, and rock and roll. Electric guitar was commercialized by Gibson in partnership with Les Paul, and independently by Leo Fender of Fender Music. Concept of Seven-strings as a trend in the guitar variety got famous in the 1980s and 1990s in various parts across the globe due to the release of the Ibanez Universe guitar, endorsed by Steve Vai. In fact some artists fabricate and enhance the magic of strings of Guitar further by usage of 8 string guitar with two extra low strings. Another variety of guitar which is the electric bass guitar is very similar in tuning to the traditional double bass viol. Hybrids of acoustic and electric guitars are also common. There are also more exotic and exquisite varieties, such as guitars with two, three or rarely four necks, all manner and patterns of alternate string arrangements, fretless fingerboards (used almost exclusively on bass guitars, meant to imitate the sound of a stand-up bass), 5.1 surround guitar, and such.

Learning Guitar Tip: 8 Steps To Develop A Highly Efficient Practice Schedule

Get More From Your Guitar Practice
If you are like most guitar players you sometimes feel frustrated with your guitar playing. You know mastering guitar playing takes a LOT of time, energy and effort. It seems like a huge mountain to climb in order to reach the highly advanced levels of guitar playing. You know that few people who attempt to climb that mountain will actually achieve it… but if you are truly determined to reach these goals you certainly can!
Fact is, one of the biggest reasons why so few people become great guitarists is not because they lack talent, but rather due to not knowing all of the things they need to do or practice in order to reach their goal. People usually have more than enough things to practice (licks, techniques, exercises, scales etc.) but struggle most with creating an overall plan to get them the result they want.
Taking your guitar playing ability from wherever it is right now to exactly where you always dreamed it could be in the shortest amount of time can be done. Having a well-structured (yet flexible) guitar practice regimen is a key first step to do this.

I know… I know… You’ve heard this before, it seems ‘obvious’, so why talk about it again here? …

… well, unfortunately, many guitarists have misconceptions about having an efficient and effective practice schedule. Others have tried it for a while but either didn’t stick with it, or had an ineffective practice plan to start with.

Have you ever believed any of the following myths?

Effective guitar practicing routines are boring, it takes all the fun out of playing guitar.

I started putting myself on a practice schedule for guitar, but it was hard to stick to it.

Practice schedules are too rigid and they restrict, or put limitations on my creativity.

A guitar practice regimen is too structured for me, I want the freedom to allow myself to drift into random things when playing guitar.

Practice routines for guitar just don’t work. I can make more progress without one.

I can’t stand to practice the same things in the same way each day.

Now think about this:

The truth is, ‘bad’ practice routines DO SUCK! However, efficient, effective and flexible ones have the power to totally transform your guitar playing, musicianship and your creativity in a shorter period of time. Imagine how much better your guitar playing life will be like after you fully reached all of your musical goals!

Good practice regimens won’t hurt your creativity, the opposite is true because you are gaining the tools to become more creative… AND your schedule can include ‘creative time’ to work on writing new songs, improvising, etc.

It’s not boring to practice that which directly relates to the very things you want to achieve as a guitar player and musician. Yes practicing the same exercise for 30 minutes ‘is’ boring, which is why you shouldn’t design a guitar practice schedule in such a way. We want to create a structure that works, not one that will drive you crazy.

You do NOT need to spend all your guitar practice time with a fixed schedule. If you have 90 minutes to practice, invest 45-60 minutes working from your planned guitar practicing regimen. Use the rest of time to freely do whatever you feel like playing that day.

The best routines are NOT the same each day. A good guitar practice workout schedule should be effective, efficient and flexible.
A practice schedule is a roadmap to freedom of being able to play whatever you want! But this doesn’t mean that you don’t have any room to have fun, be creative, and enjoy playing guitar in the process. The only difference is that now you will be enjoying the process more WHILE you get better, and avoid mindlessly playing around on the guitar with no direction or sense of purpose. As a result, it will take you much less time to become the exact kind of excellent guitar player you want to be.

The best way to think about an efficient practice schedule is with an analogy of a map. When you prepare to travel somewhere, you first analyze where you are (Point A), and then prepare the most direct and time efficient route of arriving to your destination (Point B).

8 Steps To Creating Your Own Guitar Practice Routine

Step 1. Get very clear on what your LONG TERM guitar playing / musical goals are. Beware of distractions… there is a big difference between ‘short term goals’ and ‘distractions’. True short-term goals should be consistent with your long-term goals. If they aren’t, then you might be simply distracting yourself from what you really want to achieve as a guitar player and musician. When creating your practice routine, focus mainly on long-term goals.

Step 2. Balance your existing strengths and RELEVANT weaknesses. Seek to turn your strengths into super strengths and ‘only’ work on weaknesses that are truly ‘relevant’ to your goals (see step 4 below).

Step 3. Be realistic about how much time you can practice each day. As mentioned above, you can and should allow ‘free time’ in your schedule to learn, practice, or do other things with your guitar outside of your written guitar practice regimen.

Step 4. You must be 100% sure you really know all the musical elements which are needed to reach your long term goals, AND you need to be clear about which of these elements are the ‘primary’ and ‘secondary’ priorities for you to focus on right now in order to reach your specific goals. To get help, I have created a totally free resource for you to use.

Step 5. Contrary to popular belief, creativity CAN be taught, learned and practiced. Always include creativity development into your practice schedule (or work on it at least in your free time).

Step 6. Application is key! Be sure to add time each day to work on applying your skills even if you have not mastered them yet! It’s a big mistake to work only on mastering something before seeking to apply it.

Step 7. Don’t create the same schedule for each day of the week, your schedule should be based on larger period of time (I use an 8-day practice and learning schedule for my students – works much better compared to a routine that repeats itself each day). Maybe 2, or 3 of the days are the same, but the other days are a little different (yet still based on the above steps mentioned).

Step 8. Create 3-5 different 8-day practice regimens. Use each one twice (16 days) before working with the next one. Be sure that when you create them that each are based on the first 7 steps above.

  What’s Next?

  1. Get committed!
2. Stay committed! Follow through with your plan and watch your guitar playing get better and easier. If you find it hard to stay committed, focus on the ‘reasons’ behind the goals you have set for yourself, in other words, keep in mind “why” you want to reach those goals. How you will feel after you achieve them and are able to be/do/have what you want as a musician.

About the author: Tom Hess is a professional touring guitarist and recording artist. You can choose from electric guitars, acoustic guitars, and classical guitars. Typically, the acoustic guitar is the most versatile, but it may not be the best choice for you at the start. No matter what you choose, you will complete the baby steps of instruction if you continue with perseverance.

Acoustic guitar has a wooden hollow body and steel strings. No amp is needed to play it and it can be played acoustically although you can opt to use amp. Some acoustic guitars are available with pickups. All you need to do is plug-in a sound cord and start playing the acoustic guitar.

Some acoustic-electric guitars come with a pre-installed pickup. There are also some acoustic guitars which do not have a pickup installed. If you really want a pickup on your guitar, you can get a custom one put on later for about sixty bucks. This will help in producing some different sounds.

Classical guitars will normally have nylon strings instead of their steel counterparts that you see in acoustic guitars. The classical guitar is also used primarily for classical music. This isn't set in stone though, as you can use it for both finger picking and Spanish music as well.

Electric guitars generally have plastic solid body and thin steel strings. It is considered to be the heart of rock music as well as an integral part of many different types of modern music. It requires an amp to play it. It may be used with effect pedals to produce a unique tone along with the unique sound produced by the electric guitar.

No matter what guitar you want, always keep a few things in mind. The size of the guitar will matter depending on how big you are. You need to tailor the fretboard, neck, and other things to suit your individual needs. Only then will you feel like the guitar was made for you.

You can also buy accessories such as medium picks or a capo, used for changing guitar keys. This will also help you in producing different sounds and learning guitar but make sure all those accessories fits your guitar perfectly.

I would suggest that you spend your free time learning the guitar. Do it as much as possible for the first few months, and you will see great results. You can learn from a guitar tutor, online guitar lessons, or even a guitar DVD instructional course. No matter which way you choose to learn, make sure you are having fun.

Welcome, Welcome!

Hello there!
